On successful completion of this class, students should be able to:
- Engage with various methods and approaches to comparative analysis in political science
- Compare and analyze government institutions in the developed and developing world
- Explain the origins and effects of different government institutions like presidentialism, federalism, and electoral rules
- Explain how government institutions function in non-democratic settings
Module Learning Aims
To develop familiarity with the main conceptual and theoretical frameworks used in the comparative study of government institutions. To critically evaluate the merits of various empirical research strategies. To understand how political institutions under democratic and non-democratic regimes work
Module Content
The seminar will provide an introduction to the formation and functioning of government institutions. It will cover both the developed and developing world and democratic and non-democratic systems. Students will engage with some of the major theories and empirical strategies used in the study of comparative politics.
