Are Our Institutions Fit for Purpose? Political Reform in the Republic of Ireland.

To all those who attended and participated in the conference in TCD on Monday 22nd, the organisers would like to thank you for your time and thoughtful contributions.

The conference ended with a round table discussion under the title of ‘What next?’ with several contributors asking how the impetus of the conference might be usefully carried on.

We will be looking into further conferences with more sharply focused agendas and a similar set of contributors to Monday’s event.

We feel that the interaction of political scientists, media commentators, civil society groups and political practitioners is vital to the production of informed and non-partisan debate on how our political system should best serve the interests of the public.

In the coming weeks we will establish a political analysis blog site under the politicalreform.ie banner.

The purpose of this web-based forum is to provide contemporary analysis and to encourage moderated comment on the types of issues that were raised at the conference. The internet is a wonderful tool for both making these debates public and facilitating participation from those who usually do not have an opportunity to voice their opinions.

For further information on the contributions by the presenters from Monday’s conference, the fifth edition of Politics in the Republic of Ireland will be published in 20/8/2009.
