General election surveys

These are all portable SPSS files but contain little or no documentation other than the SPSS labels. They are also compressed and will need to be unzipped (ZipIt for the MAC) [PCs may useWinZip]

1997: Comparative riches. First, the Lansdowne/RTE exit poll, analysed by M. Marsh and R. Sinnott in M. Marsh and P. Mitchell (eds) How Ireland Voted 1997. Westview, 1999. there are also five IMS polls combined in a single file and three MRBI polls.

1992: Three IMS polls were also carried out during the campaign, Nov 7, 13 and 17. These were analysed in M.Marsh and R. Sinnott, 'The Voters: Stability and Change' in M. Gallagher and M. Laver (eds) How Ireland Voted 1992. Folens, 1993.

1989: Lansdowne Market Reseach carried out a panel study at this election, although the second post election wave contained only a couple of items. This was used to examine turnout in M. Marsh 'Accident or design? Non voting in Ireland', Irish Political Studies Vol 6, 1991 pp. 1-14. For 1989 see also the European Election Study for that year. There are also three MRBI surveys for that election campaign. These were used in M. Marsh and R. Sinnott 'How the voters decided' in M.Gallagher and R. Sinnott (eds) How Ireland Voted 1989. PSAI Press, 1990.

1987: Three MRBI polls combined into a single file from the 1987 campaign. These provided data for the analysis of issue voting and class voting in Laver, Marsh and Sinnott 'Patterns of party support' in M. Laver, P. Mair and R. Sinnott (eds) How Ireland Voted Poolbeg, 1988, and S. Bowler and D. Farrell, 'Irish Voter Rationality', Economic and Social Review XXI, 1990: 251-268. There are also three IMS polls. These were used in the analysis of leader support in the Laver, Marsh and Sinnott chapter cited above.

1977: Three NOP polls carried out during the election campaign. were used by Richard Sinnott: 'The Electorate', in H.Penniman Ireland at the Polls: The Dail elections of 1977 American Enterprise Institute 1978.

1969: This is a Gallup poll from before the 1969 election. It was analysed by John Whyte in his 'Ireland: Politics without social bases' chapter in Rose (ed) Electoral Behaviour Free Press 1973, by Peter Mair in 'The autonomy of the political: the development of the Irish party system', Comparative Politics XI 1979 pp.445-65 and by Michael Marsh in the 'Ireland' chapter in M. Franklin, T. Mackie and H. Valen (eds) Electoral Change Cambridge 1992.
