Junior Freshman Physics for students of Theoretical Physics

Modules

PY1T10 - Physics for Theoretical Physics
PY1T20 - Physics for Theoretical Physics

JJF Practical Laboratory Classes – Michaelmas Term, Hilary Term
Students attend a 3 hour experimental/computational laboratory once a week.

JF Online Tutorials – Michaelmas Term, Hilary Term
Weekly assignments are set, using the Mastering Physics online tutorial system.

JF Small Group Tutorials – Michaelmas Term, Hilary Term
Every student is assigned to a particular member of staff, as one of a small group of 4-6 students. Tutorials are held every two weeks, and are intended to introduce the students to College and the School, and to provide a forum for discussion of topics in physics. Students are encouraged to suggest topics themselves, and have an opportunity to bring any problems they are having to the attention of the member of staff who leads their group.

    Exams – Trinity Term
Information about examinations is posted on the Junior Freshman notice board (outside the labs on the first floor of SNIAM) during Hilary Term. Each module, PY1T10 and PY1T20, is examined in a separate end-of-year 3-hour examination paper during the annual exam session in Trinity Term. The overall mark in each module is calculated as the weighted average of the exam mark (60%), the laboratory practical mark (30%) and online tutorial mark (10%). If a student does not achieve a pass grade in a module, the student must either compensate according to the rules of the TP course or take a supplemental exam in that module in the following Michaelmas Term. Marks in the supplemental exams are calculated in the same way as in the annual exam.
