*Module Aims:

to provide an introduction to the field of plasmonics , to give an overview of applications of Fourier optics in imaging systems and an introduction to novel imaging systems

*Module Learning Outcomes: On successful completion of this module, students will be able to:

  1. Understand the basic concepts of plasmonics
  2. Design plasmonic platforms for passive and active components, with applications such as waveguides and sensing
  3. Solve basic problems using Fourier transforms this in the context of optical imaging
  4. Develop an understanding of Fourier optics in imaging systems and of applications of novel imaging systems

*Teaching and Learning Methods, including contact hours:

  • Frontal Teaching: 18 hrs
  • Individual Reading: 64 hrs
  • Assignments: 30 hrs individual work


  • Surface plasmon polaritons propagating at metal/insulator interfaces
  • Localised surface plasmons
  • Interactions with emitters and sensing devices
  • Analysis of two-dimensional linear systems
  • Fourier transforms and imaging properties of lenses
  • Novel imaging and applications of Fourier optics in imaging

*Evaluation of the module:

Student feedback will be solicited at the end of the core teaching session. A review of the module and its related materials will be conducted at the end of the academic year.
