PY5025 - Teaching for Physics Postgraduate Teaching Assistants

What do we really mean by teaching physics at university level? After all, it is what students learn that is of the utmost importance, and not what we teach them. The aim of this module is to inform physics postgraduates of science education research with the goal of improving their teaching efficacy and enhancing undergraduate learning outcomes in the classroom and laboratory setting.

In this 5 ECTS module we will examine different aspects of 3rd level physics education through readings and student led discussions. We will discuss the importance of conceptual questions, meta-cognition (for students and teachers), and how the limitations of the “traditional lecture” can be overcome through peer-to-peer learning. We will examine the best practices for effective teaching that will help prepare postgraduates for their role as Teaching Assistants in the Physics Laboratories, and in future classroom interactions.
