Facilities

The School of Physics is spread over a number of buildings in College, with the newest space residing in the Centre for Research on Adaptive Nanostructures and Nanodevices, otherwise known as CRANN. Apart from facilities within the School itself, members of staff in the School have access to the following facilites on or very near campus.

CRANN

CRANN has a cleanroom, a microscopy centre,a bio-nanophysics facility, a femtosecond (fs) laser laboratory and equipment, such as scanning probe microscopes.

AML

The Advanced Microscopy Laboratory (AML) is a custom-built, state-of-the-art 557.4 m² facility, located in the Trinity Technology and Enterprise Campus. This centre houses a critical mass of high-end scanning and imaging electron and ion-beam microscopes for sample imaging, analytics/characterization and nanofabrication.

TCHPC

The Trinity Centre for High Performance Computing (TCHPC) was founded in 1997 and provides large-scale supercomputing, high-end coputing, data management and visualization facility for TCD, other third-level institutes and for Dublin.

Optical Analysis Laboratory

The Optical Analysis Laboratory is located in the SNIAM Building (Sami Nasr Institute of Advanced Materials). Various techniques are made available for the complete optical characterization of suitable material systems. Details of the equipment and technical expertise available within this and other laboratories in the School of Physics and CRANN are published online (http://www.tcd.ie/Physics/opticslab/). Services can also be provided to external departments and commercial concerns.

Photonics Research Laboratory

The Photonics Research Laboratory is located in CRANN and is a unique ultrafast fs laser laboratory that is used to investigate dynamic processes in materials, and the interactions between lasers and materials, principally in nanoscale materials such as quantum dots.

SNIAMS

In the SNIAMS building we have a well stocked chemistry lab for sample preparation, material studies and electrochemistry.

Physics Workshop & IT Services

The School also has in-house electronic, mechanical-engineering, IT and audio-visual support services.
