Astrophysics

Astrophysics

Astrophysics was added as a research interest of the School in 2001. Astrophysics research focuses on the observation, study and modelling of the advanced stages of stellar evolution for stars similar in mass to our own sun (BE), understanding the fundamental physics involved in the generation, storage and release of energy on the solar surface and in the atmosphere (PG) and the study of stellar atmospheres and radiative transfer (GH).

Academics in the School who work in this area are Brian Espey, Peter Gallagher and Graham Harper . Academics from other institutes who are affiliated to the School and who work in this research area are Prof. Tom Ray (Robert Ball Adjunct Professor of Astrophysics), Prof. Luke Drury (Director of the School of Cosmic Physics, Dublin INstitute for Advanced Studies), Dr. Simon Jeffery, Research Astronomer at Armagh Observatory.
