John McGilp graduated in Chemistry from Oxford University and obtained a PhD in Physics from the University of Liverpool. He has been in the Physics Department of TCD since 1977, where he has built up an internationally recognised surface research group, specialising in surface and interface optics. He has over 120 peer-reviewed publications, 1 patent, and his work averages about 50 citations a year in the research literature. He was appointed “Professor of Surface and Interface Optics” in 2007.
