Area of Research : Advanced Magnetic Materials/Permanent Magnets
Title of Thesis : Synthesis, Structure and Magnetic properties of (R1R2)Fe17-xGax { (R1R2) = (Ho,Er), (Tm, Pr), (Nd, Sm) and (Sm, Pr)} compounds and their carbides.

Specialties: Spin Electronics: Magnetic semiconductors, half-metallic ferromagnets, magnetotransport, permanent magnetic materials, soft magnetic materials, interstitially modified intermetallics, Mössbauer spectroscopy, etc.

Major Research Contracts:

ROMEO (Replacement and Original Magnet Engineering Options)

In accordance with EU objectives to remove, or greatly reduce, the need for heavy rare earths in permanent magnets, ROMEO will first research and develop several novel microstructural-engineering strategies that will dramatically improve the properties of magnets based purely on light rare earths elements, especially the coercivity, which will enable them to be used for applications above 100°C. ROMEO’s second ambitious goal is to develop a totally rare-earth-free magnet; aiming to drastically reduce Europe’s dependence on Chinese imports while shifting emphasis in magnet manufacturing from a raw-materials-dependent business to one that is essentially knowledge-based, and flourishing in Europe. The ROMEO consortium assembles the best European academic expertise in permanent magnetism together with world-leading magnet manufacturers and European companies who are eager to exploit these newly developed materials, especially within the “green energy” sector, while associates in the USA and Japan bring special expertise and global reach to the ROMEO consortium.

NISE (Nanoscale Interfaces and Spin Electronics)

The basic question underlying the research proposed in NISE is ‘How do interfaces influence spin currents, and how can they be controlled by interface engineering? The name coined for this subfield is ‘spinterface science’. We aim to understand and control spin transport and scattering at interfaces involving metals, oxides and organic materials. The basic premise is that interfaces are critical to the control of magnetic behaviour. A specific working hypothesis, relating to d0 magnetism, is that the grain boundary interfaces are the seat of high-temperature Stoner-like ferromagnetism. Devices with novel and optimized interfaces will be developed, including magnetic sensors that can be applied to problems such as contactless imaging of neural activity.

MANSE (MAgnetic Nanostructures and Spin Electronics)

A four-year platform research program in nanoscale magnetism and spin electronics (MANSE) is proposed, following the establishment of a suitable skills and equipment base during the successful CINSE program (2001-2006). MANSE involves materials development, device conception and evaluation, and interdisciplinary initiatives associating nanoscale magnetism with electrochemistry and cell biology.

CINSE (Conception and Implementation of Nanoscale Spin Electronics)

A major program on Spin Electronics, CINSE is focused on spin polarised electron transport in magnetic nanostructures. CINSE covers investment in a new nanoscience facility, support for staff students and a wide ranging scientific program.

M2EMS (Magnetic Micro Electro Mechanical Systems)

The aim of this project is the development of new permanent magnet film based devices which could be used in micro-motors, micro-generators, sensors and read heads and help to significantly reduce the size, weight, and cost of these devices. The proposal focuses first on the development of nanostructured magnetic materials with low temperature processes compatible with microelectronics environment.

AMORE (Advanced Magnetic Oxides for Responsive Engineering)

AMORE will develop a new generation of ferromagnetic half-metallic oxides and demonstrate their potential in patented nanoscale magneto resistance. The key idea is to exploit the high degree of spin polarisation of these chemically stable oxides to achieve large magneto resistive effects in the practical temperature range up to 120ºC. For this, an understanding of spin transport at grain boundaries and interfaces in these materials is required. Having selected the most suitable of the new double perovskite oxides, the aim is to evaluate the technical and economic feasibility of magneto-resistive elements fabricated from them by two routes

  1. Screen printing - low-cost technique suitable for making contact-less ^potentiometers for the auto industry among others, and
  2. Epitaxial thin-film growth for planar tunnel junctions suitable as magneto electronic elements.

A new generic materials technology for sensitive, robust, low-cost components will be launched, which will boost European competitivity in a fast-changing field.

HITEMAG (HIgh Temperature MAGnets)

The aim of this project is the development of new magnetic materials and prototype devices for high temperature applications i.e. up to 450ºC working temperature. New standards and measurement protocols will also be developed and defined for high temperature permanent magnets. The discovery of high -performance NdFeB magnets in 1983 has led to an extraordinary development of permanent magnet applications. The annual global production of these materials is presently over 10000 tones. The properties of these materials however rapidly degrade as temperature is increased and they cannot be used above 150°C-180°C. From these temperatures and up to 300°C, the Sm(Co,Cu, Fe, Zr) magnets are preferred to the NdFeb. Above this temperature, no material is available although important potential applications exist in the fields of aeronautics, the space (satellite) industry, electronics, and the automotive (petrol and electric) industry.

Activities/Interests: Wicket-keeping batsman in TCD Cricket team

Venky joined TCD in December 1998 after completing his Ph.D. in Indian Institute of Technology, (I.I.T.) Madras (1994-1998). He is currently working on magnetic semiconductors, novel d0 ferromagnets, half metallic oxides and intermetallics, magnetotransport, hard and soft magnetic materials etc.
