TRINITY AND BUBBLES IN BEIJING

As reported in the press and described in the April 2008 RTE documentary series The Importance of being Irish, the celebrated Water Cube building at the Beijing Olympic site is based on a structure that was developed by Denis Weaire and Robert Phelan at Trinity as an ideal arrangement of bubbles in a foam.

Details of this extraordinary story and the astonishing building are to be found on many websites. See here for some photographs, and here for some background reading on the Kelvin Problem. You can also read more about it in Nature, Science News or the New York Times

Professor Weaire has told the full story in part of the second edition  of The Pursuit of Perfect Packing (see bookcover), described as a “ whimsical introductory account of historical and current packing problems”. It deals with many important mathematical/geometrical/physical problems in an accessible style, and some humour. The book is available in hardback from Taylor and Francis at uk.tandf@thomsonpublishingservices.co.uk
