Single Honours Philosophy
Until recently this degree was referred to, within the college, by its early 20th century title of Mental and Moral Science. In this degree programme students study philosophy intensively for four years.
In the first two years, called Junior Freshman (JF) and Senior Freshman (SF) respectively, students study traditional courses in the history of philosophy, as well as engaging with certain fundamental philosophical problems: such as, the debates surrounding free will and determinism, the nature of morality, the nature of language, the existence of God, and the scope and limits of human knowledge.
In the final two years, called Junior Sophister (JS) and Senior Sophister (SS) respectively, students are able to select courses from a reasonably wide choice. In this way, students can specialise in the areas of philosophy that they have found most interesting and most suitable to their skills.
- In the JF year students take 16 course components,
- In the SF year students take 14 course components.
- Then in the JS and SS years students select 6 courses to take each year.
Please view the course outline section for details on the content of specific courses.
