PPES Students

The new four year undergraduate degree in Philosophy, Political Science, Economics and Sociology (PPES), hosted by the School of Social Sciences and Philosophy, had its first intake of students in October 2008.

The PPES degree programme provides a unique opportunity to study four subjects that are relevant for understanding any society. Philosophy will train you to think critically, to question your own assumptions, and someone elses, and to articulate your point of view carefully and thoughtfully. Political Science is the field that concerns the theory and practice of politics and the description and analysis of political systems and political behaviour. Economists explore how people and institutions behave and function when producing, exchanging and using goods and services. Sociology is the study of social life, social change, and the social causes and consequences of human behavior.

  • In the Junior Freshman (JF) year students take 6 compulsory courses from within all four subjects. Two of these courses are from philosophy.
  • In the Senior Freshman (SF) year students choose three of the four subjects and take a total of 6 courses. If it is among their chosen subjects, students will take 2 courses in philosophy.
  • In the Junior Sophister (JS) year students will take courses from two of the three subjects taken in the SF year. If it is among their chosen subjects, students will choose 3 courses to take in philosophy.
  • In the Senior Sophister (SS) year students decide whether to continue with both subjects taken in the JS year (joint honours), or to specialise in one of the two subjects (single honours).

Students choosing to major in philosophy will choose 6 courses, while those opting to study both subjects equally will have a choice between taking 4 courses, or taking 2 courses and writing a thesis.

In all cases students graduate with a BA (Moderatorship) in Philosophy, Political Science, Economics and Sociology.
