Philosophy is a rigorous and challenging discipline in its own right, but it also has applications to other fields of study. As such, students who are interested in pursuing an undergraduate degree in Philosophy at Trinity College Dublin have the option of studying it on its own, or combining it with another subject, or subjects, to suit their interests.

Degree Programmes

At Trinity philosophy may be studied under the following three degree programmes each of which is four years in duration.

  • Single Honours Philosophy (SHP)
This is an intensive honours degree in philosophy. Students enrolled in this degree programme receive an in–depth education in philosophical theory, method and practice.
  • Two subject Moderatorship (TSM)
This is the traditional way of combining philosophy with another arts subject (e.g., English, Psychology, History, etc.). Depending on the programme students may study both subjects equally, or choose to major either in philosophy or their other chosen subject.
  • Philosophy, Political Science, Economics and Sociology (PPES)
This degree programme gives students the unique opportunity to study four subjects that are relevant to achieving a full understanding of any society. No other university in the Republic of Ireland provides this wide combination of subjects in a single programme. The four–year PPES degree is organised by the School of Social Sciences and Philosophy, and had its first intake of students in 2008.
