Message from Head of Department
Dear Alumni,
We hope you are keeping well, and thriving both professionally and personally. We hope that your experience in Trinity, and in particular your study of Philosophy, has been of benefit to you no matter where you are or what you have been doing. The Department of Philosophy very much wishes that you will stay in touch with us – and with each other through us – however long ago you may have graduated.
To this end, we (both as a Department and as part of the School of Social Sciences and Philosophy, of which we have been a member for the past several years) will be organising a variety of activities and events. For example, next year we are looking forward to two very major events: a conference on Berkeley (4–6 April 2014); and the Donnellan Lectures to be delivered by one of the most distinguished living philosophers, David Chalmers (5–9 May 2014).
We are also preparing a number of initiatives that would assist the Department in maintaining its presence and vibrancy and, ideally, in growing and developing further – and thus maintaining its status as Ireland's leading philosophy department and one that attracts talented undergraduate and graduate students from all over the world. The initiatives include supporting the Grattan Ph.D. scholarships as well as key academic posts.
In what follows we have set out a number of different ways in which alumni can stay connected and involved with the Department of Philosophy, the School of Social Sciences and Philosophy, and the College. You may, of course, also contact me directly. I would be delighted to hear from you, to learn how you are, and to keep you updated about forthcoming projects and events.
Yours, with best wishes,
Vasilis Politis

Share Your Experience
Have you started a company? Made a difference in Ireland or the wider world? Done something different and unexpected? We encourage alumni to come back to College to speak to undergraduate and graduate students about their experiences.
Alumni also participate in other events and activities, such as the School's Henry Grattan Public Lecture Series which aims to promote informed debate on social, political and economic issues.
If you are interested in getting involved please email sspalum@tcd.ie
Alumni Appeal Thank You
Thanks to the generosity of our graduates who donated to the Alumni Appeal the School has established the Dermot MacAleese Teaching Award. This award recognises teaching assistants who have made an outstanding contribution in the pursuit of teaching excellence; it is the first time such an award has been presented at Trinity.
Congratulations to Richard Hamilton for recognition of his outstanding work as a teaching assistant in Philosophy.
The Grattan Scholars
The School has developed a new scholarship programme – The Grattan Scholars – with the aim of advancing cutting–edge social science research and teaching. In a rapidly changing global environment such knowledge is central to our economic and social wellbeing, growth and development-
The Grattan Scholars are a cohort of exceptional Ph.D. students whose work will have a real impact on Trinity and in helping to understand the evolving changes facing society. Teaching is also an important part of the Scholars' remit, contributing to the academic life of the School while enriching the students's learing opportunities.
We are delighted to confirm that the first two Ph.D. students commenced in Autumn 2012.
