Overview
The tradition of creative writing long associated with 21 Westland Row is being upheld and nurtured by the people who work there today. The Writer Fellowship, co-sponsored by the School of English and the Irish Arts Council, has since 1986 given student writers the opportunity to receive expert criticism, encouragement and guidance from experienced practitioners in the field.
In autumn 2000 we initiated, in association with the British Council, an International Writer Fellow post for the Michaelmas Term (October-December).The Anglo-Hungarian poet George Szirtes was the first writer to hold this position. Other International Writer Fellows to hold the position were: Leone Ross 2001. The Scottish novelist Andrew O'Hagan, 2002. The poet Ian Duhig, in 2003, Carlo Gébler 2004, Courttia Newland 2005, Edward A Markham 2006. Along with a host of Visiting Writers from Ireland and abroad, the Oscar Wilde Centre is a hub of literary activity in the heart of Trinity College and Dublin.
