Enhancing Quality of Service Provision
Promoting equal voices in the development of Quality of Service Provision
In line with international trends, the Department of Health and Children (2006) and the Mental Health Commission (2008) have called for the involvement of people who use mental health services, and carers in the development, delivery and evaluation of services. This increased involvement is part of a wider commitment to service user and carer involvement in all aspect of health care and is compatible with the inclusionary themes of modern mental health advocacy (Mental Health Commission 2007; 2008). Involving those most affected by an issue is not only an ethically appropriate way to proceed in research but also an essential component of service developments. Such involvement will not only promote the interest of disadvantaged groups and offer a means of maximizing autonomy but it has to potential to illuminate aspects of care that might be otherwise hidden. The focus of this research theme is on building a body of knowledge that gives voice to service users, families/carers, and practitioners, experiences of, and involvement in, quality service provision.
