Professional Certificate in Nurse/Midwife Prescribing of Medicinal Products

Structure & Delivery

Students wishing to apply for a place on this course must be supported by a host Health Service Provider and a medical supervisor. The Certificate in Nursing (Nurse/ Midwife Prescribing) will be a minor award at level 8 as set out by the National Framework of Qualifications.

Course Content

Students of the Certificate in Nurse/Midwife Prescribing of Medicinal Products take the following modules:

• NU7019 Advancing the Professional Role Nurse Prescriber Certificate (10)
  
• NU7516 Health Physical Assessment (10)
  
• NU7512 Prescribing Medicinal Products (10)

Entry Requirement

Each applicant must meet all three types of criteria namely professional, academic and clinical as follows:

Professional

• Applicants must be registered in the General, Psychiatric, Children’s, Intellectual Disability, Midwifery or Public Health Nurse divisions of the active register maintained by The Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland; and
  
• Have a minimum of three years post-registration clinical experience during the last five years with at least one year full-time experience in the specific area of practice.
  

Academic

• Possess competencies recognised at Level 8 of the National Framework of Qualifications (for example a higher diploma or an honours degree); and
  
• Demonstrate evidence of further post-registration education (for example completion of The Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland category I or II courses or other postgraduate courses)

Clinical Practice Experience

• Be employed in a clinical area in Ireland that is approved by the course team and satisfy The Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland Requirements and Standards.
  
• Submit a written commitment from a host organisation supporting the applicant for the clinical practicum. A Site Declaration Form signed by the Director of Nursing/Midwifery/Public Health Nursing (or relevant nurse/midwife manager) must be submitted with the entry application
  
• Submit a written confirmation from a medical practitioner who has agreed to act as a mentor for the required term of supervised practice (this mentor should also sign the Site Declaration Form).
  
• Be familiar with information technology in particular email and internet use and have access to computer facilities including email and internet.

Documentation required to complete application

• A copy of your current Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland registration card.
• A copy of your Curriuclum Vitae
• The names and contact details of two academic referees must be included in your online application.
• Copies of academic transcripts from completed educational courses.
• Copies of official awards (parchments) from completed educational courses.
• Written commitment from your Director of Nursing to support the student during the clinical practicum and to nominate a suitably qualified practitioner to act as a clinical supervisor/mentor during the student's clinical learning experience.
• A downloadable Medication Site Audit tool consortium form signed by the Director of Nursing must be submitted with the student’s application. This must also be signed by the Medical Practitioner (Mentor)
• A downloadable Site Declaration for Medication Prescribing form signed by the Director of Nursing must be submitted with the student’s application. This must also be signed by the Medical Practitioner (Mentor)

Language

All applicants whose first language is not English and who have not been educated through the medium of English must present one of the following qualifications in the English language:

IELTS (Academic version) and IELTS Indicator : Grade 6.5 overall with a minimum of grade of 6 in each category

TOEFL and TOEFL iBT Special Home Edition: 88 internet-based, 570 paper-based, 230 computer-based

• TOEFL: 88 internet-based, 570 paper-based, 230 computer-based
• University of Cambridge: 
  Proficiency Certificate, Grade C or better (CEFR Level C1 or C2) 
  Advanced Certificate, Grade C or better (CEFR Level C1 or C2) 
• Pearson Test of English (Academic) - PTE Academic: a minimum score of 63 to be eligible (with no section score below 59)
• Duolingo English Test: minimum overall score of 110/160, dated since January 2020
• An award certificate with a minimum II.1 overall score from Trinity's Centre for English Language Learning and Teaching's Pre-Masters pathway programme. The Pre-Master’s Pathway Programme is an academic English course for international students with conditional offers for postgraduate study at Trinity. Passing the programme means you meet Trinity’s English language requirement and can progress to your postgraduate course without retaking IELTS or any other exam.

Please also note that existing IELTS, TOEFL, Cambridge and PET scores up to three years old (rather than two) will be accepted for 2021/22 applications in light of test centre closures.

An applicant whose first language is not English but who has taken a degree through the medium of English may be eligible. However some courses may request applicants to present an English Language qualification under certain circumstances.
