Masters in Science in Nursing - Child Health and Wellbeing

Overview The aim of the MSc in Nursing - Child Health and Wellbeing is to provide a solid academic base to the understanding and development of nursing practice in the area of child health and illness. The strand will strengthen and develop the knowledge, skills, competencies and attitudes of the participants, thus enabling them to fulfil their highest potential in the personal, professional and practice arena of children's health. The strand will provide advanced study in research methods, the theoretical and practical aspects of management, clinical practice and leadership and child health perspectives as well as contemporary issues in child health and wellbeing. It is anticipated that graduates of this strand, in applying their learning, will be enabled to promote and develop excellence in children's illness, child health and wellbeing in primary, secondary and tertiary health care services.

The various modules offered lead on from, and complement, the subjects taken at Degree and Postgraduate Diploma level of learning. On completion of this course, participants will be able to:

    • Identify and critically analyse alternative philosophies, perspectives and approaches that inform best practice in children's health and wellbeing
    • Discuss the national and international context of child health and wellbeing
    • Identify and discuss the contemporary challenges in health and wellbeing for children within an Irish context
    • Critically discuss the development and delivery of high quality effective services to promote the physical, social, financial and emotional needs of children and their families
    • Utilise their professional expertise care provision for children and their families through the application of enhanced knowledge, reflective skills and research-based evidence
    • Differentiate the distinct contribution of team members in an interprofessional models of care including ambulatory and community care delivery to children and their families
    • Critically appraise research evidence underpinning child health and wellbeing practices and theoretical frameworks
    • Identify, plan, design and undertake a research study relevant to your area of practice
    • Identify, lead, conduct, disseminate and evaluate research which advances excellence in children's health care practice in local, national/international contexts
    • Contribute to local, national and international policy development and its translation into practice.


M. Sc. duration and programme structure

The programme takes place over two years on a part-time basis and over one year on a full-time basis.

A blended learning approach is utilised in the delivery of theoretical content, including lectures, group discussion, WebCT and self directed learning. The assessment process used is a combination of written and practical assignments.

Year one of the part-time taught masters course starts with a full week on 16 September 2013 and continues with classes on the following Thursdays until 12 December 2013. There is a break then before it recommences on 16 January 2014 and continues on Thursdays until the end of March or early April. Teaching and learning includes some web-based learning.

Attendance in Year 2 of the M.Sc. course involves attending eleven workshops scheduled between end of September 2013 and end of February 2014.

Full-time students attend the Year One and Year Two activities outlined above.

Entry Requirement

The entry criteria for this strand are:

  • Current registration as a nurse with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland. or in the case of international applicants for theory only strands, be registered as a professional nurse who is entitled to practise as a qualified or registered nurse in their own country.
  • To hold at least an upper second class (2:1) honors degree in nursing.
  • Or otherwise satisfy the course committee that they have the ability to complete and benefit from the course.

Closing date and late applications

Applications are currently being accepted online for this course. Courses are usually advertised in early March of the year of entry and the normal closing date is 3rd May 2013.

Progression

All students register on the M. Sc. programme in the first instance. On successful completion of all the requirements of the first year, students may progress to the second year of the programme during which they complete a dissertation; or may opt to exit and be awarded a Postgraduate Diploma.

Flexibility in Progression in M.Sc./P.Grad. Dip. programmes

The School of Nursing and Midwifery are pleased to offer flexibility in pathways for progression from P.Grad. Dip. level to M.Sc. level within its M.Sc. programmes.  The following is a summary of the pathways for such re-entry:

  • On successful completion of all  modules of Year One (60 ECTS credits), students may proceed immediately to year two in the next academic year to complete the M.Sc. programme.
  • On successful completion of all  modules of Year One (60 ECTS credits), students may exit the programme without any award (deferring the award), but may apply to return to complete the M.Sc. programme within four years.

Further pathways options available for alumni who already hold a PGrad Dip, in respect of a programme which they successfully completed in the School of Nursing and Midwifery TCD within the previous four years.

Language

All applicants whose first language is not English and who have not been educated through the medium of English must present one of the following qualifications in the English language:
IELTS: Grade 6.5
TOEFL: 230-computer based, 570 paper based
Cambridge Certificate of Advanced English: Grade C
Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency in English: Grade C

Annual Tuition Fees for 2012 were as follows:

Part-time

2012 Year One Annual Tuition fees for new entrants were EU: €4,750 and non-EU: €9,500
2012 Year Two Annual Tuition fees for new entrants were EU: €4,750 and non-EU: €9,500

Full-time

2012 Annual Tuition fees for new entrants were EU: €8,750 and non-EU: €17,500

2013 fees have not yet been announced.
