Clinical Placement

Students undertaking the MSc in Nursing (Advanced Nursing Practice in Emergency Nursing) are required to work in an Emergency Department; for a minimum of 1,000 hours (approx 40 weeks). This clinical placement takes place during the first year of the course and occurs in the students own area of employment under supervision of an experienced senior clinician.

The most significant factor in establishing a climate conducive to teaching/learning is the formation of the relationship between clinical teacher and student. The clinical teacher is multifaceted and involves the individual to act as role model, teacher, facilitator, supervisor, guide and evaluator and in the true sense of the word assumes the guardianship of individual students. The mentors will make a considerable contribution in the clinical learning environment by utilising motivational principles, critical thinking strategies and collaborative decision making to allow for student control over his/her learning. Creating opportunities for role modelling, demonstration of expertise in practice and devoting time to critical incident analysis also form part of the mentor role. In addition their role includes guiding the student's clinical learning experience while simultaneously acting as role model and clinical resource. While on clinical placement the student will enjoy a one-to-one arrangement with a named mentor.
