| Overview | The M. Sc. / P.Grad. Dip. in Gerontological Nursing is available for registered nurses who are educated to degree level, or equivalent, and have clinical experience. The programme engages fresh and relevant content covering contemporary issues, research for evidence-based practice, advancing the theoretical foundations, ethical and legislative issues. Students will be provided with an advanced grounding in methods of research, in addition to developing the theoretical and practical aspects of management, clinical practice and education in gerontological nursing. The learning outcomes meet the educational requirements of the CNS framework and have been developed in accordance with the NQAI / IUQB frameworks at level 9 and also have Category 2 approval from An Bord Altranais. |

Clinical Placement |
Students will be rquired to undertake specialist clinical placements, as a staff nurse, either in the Department of Medicine for Older Persons, St. James's Hospital, or in other approved clinical locations. In response to the needs of Registered Nurses employed outside of Dublin, it is possible for those nurses undertaking the MSc in Gerontological Nursing to complete their specialist clinical practice within their own HSE region (as an outreach course) while continuing to complete the academic portion of the course at University of Dublin Trinity College and St. James's Hospital. This system is also in place for those nurses employed in hospitals in the Dublin area, with one or more Care of Older Persons' facilities. |
Course Duration |
The programme takes place over two years on a part-time basis. A blended learning approach is utilised in the delivery of theoretical content, including lectures, group discussion, WebCT and self directed learning. The assessment process used is a combination of written and practical assignments. Year one of the part-time taught masters course starts with a full week on 17 September 2012 and continues with classes on the following Thursdays until 13 December 2012. There is a break then before it recommences on 17 January 2013 and continues on Thursdays until the end of March or early April. Teaching and learning includes some web-based learning. Attendance in Year 2 of M.Sc. courses involves attending a selection of workshops run from September to March. These workshops are designed to support students as they progress through the various stages of their final year dissertation. Students will be free to attend any of the workshops on offer. At the end of Year 2, M.Sc. students will produce a dissertation on a chosen subject related to their field of study. |
