Midwifery Career Pathways

Midwives work in public and private health service provider settings and in the community.

Following completion of their Bachelor Degree in Midwifery and registration as a midwife with An Bord Altranais, many graduates choose to spend at least their first year gaining experience in the practice setting by working within either the public or private health servics setting. The choice of health service provider is normally determined by the fact that during their undergraduate degree, student midwives are attached to a particular health service provider.

The midwife gains invaluable experience during this practice and develops great insight into all aspects of midwifery during this practice. As a result, they develop insight into the area of midwifer that appeals to them most. The midwife may choose to persue a career pathway in midwifery practice, education or research.
