What is the Research Support System?

The Research Support System is a web-based information system, which incorporates an expertise database. The development of the Research Support System is directed by the Dean of Research. The System has been built in-house by M.I.S. (I.S. Services), and allows members of academic staff to input and update information on their academic interests and research expertise and publications. The Research Support System is managed and administered by the Library.

The Research Support System, TARA and TCD Strategy

TCD's Research Support System was developed from 2002 onwards in order to deliver specific aspects of College strategy, as expressed in the TCD Strategic Plan 2012:

" A coherent information policy for College to address the needs of management, the Library, e-learning, electronic publications and records management will be developed with a view to having an integrated view of information systems across the whole of College."

"A research database will be part of an integrated management system to help monitor our progress in research and scholarship and to help manage their support."

  • TCD Strategic Plan 2012, Chapter 5: Strategy to Realise our Vision of Trinity, Action 18, p26

The Research Support System is linked to  TARA (Trinity's Access to Research Archive) , Trinity's institutional repository. Trinity's Open Access Publications Policy is managed through TARA. Trinity announced its Open Access policy in October 2010 and was the first Irish university to adopt such a policy. TARA is harvested by Google and Google Scholar and by RIAN , OAIster, BASE, DART-Europe and OpenAIRE .
