1. Are there 24-hour reading facilities in the Library?

Two 24-hour study rooms are maintained by the College. One is the First Floor, Ussher Library (PDF 25KB) and the other is the Postgraduate 1937 Reading Room. These are closed over the Christmas break when the Library is shut.

Any equipment problems should be reported to contact numbers provided at these facilities or e-mail the IS Services Helpdesk.

2. Is there graduate membership of the Library?

Yes. See Trinity College Dublin Graduates.

3. Can you check for me if you have a book?

Duty Librarians are happy to assist. However, all users have 24 hour access to the Online Catalogue to check references, from any location with Internet access, or within the Library at Catalogue PCs.

4. Can you give me my Library password?

Separate Library passwords/PINs are no longer used by members of Trinity College Dublin; access to user records etc. is by network username and password. PINs are still issued to registered visiting readers, however. If you forget it, contact a Duty Librarian, who will issue a new one.

5. Can I donate books to the Annual Booksale?

See Donating Modern, Readily Available Books.

6. I cannot renew items online, why?

See Renewing.

7. Can I order journals from stacks online?

No. Journals are one of the exempted categories to the Automated Stacks Request system. A call slip must be used.

8. Where do I find out about grants or scholarships in Trinity College Dublin?

See the Graduate Studies page.

9. What are Superfines?

Supefines were extra fines added before exam periods. They have been replaced by graduated fines all year round.

10. I have lost my student/staff Library card...

Check with security guards at the appropriate library's entrance as soon as you discover that you have mislaid it. They can also liaise with security staff in the Arts Block. The Admissions Counter can issue temporary passes in the interim.

To obtain a replacement, students should visit the Student Records Office, House 5 during their opening hours. Staff should visit the Staff Office, House 4.

11. I think I have lost a Library book, what do I do?

See Lost Items.

12. I am trying to trace a relative who attended Trinity College Dublin...

For information on former students of the College, Alumni Dublinenses (eds. George D Burtchaell and Thomas U Sadleir, Dublin 1935) should be consulted for College students up to 1860. Alumni Dublinenses is now freely available online.

For later years, queries based on the information in the original admissions books and the published catalogues of graduates may be dealt with by the Manuscripts and Archives Research Library or staff at the Admissions Counter, Berkeley Library.

13. Does the Library have e-mail and word-processing facilities?

No. The Internet and Catalogue PCs in the Library (deliberately) do not facilitate this. Readers must use their own laptops to utilise Microsoft Word etc.

However, students from Trinity College Dublin can use computers in College Computer Rooms, including PCs in the 24-hour computer room adjacent to the Ussher Library.

14. As a student from another university, can I access my university account within the Library?

Not from the guest PCs in the Library, which are to provided to access Trinity College Dublin resources only.

15. I am having problems accessing the Library's electronic resources from home...

See Off Campus Access.

16. Where is lost property kept in the Library?

Each Library has a lost property section for non-valuable material (clothing, notes, personal books). Valuable items such as laptops, mp3 players, mobile phones etc. are held in the Librarian’s Office. Contact the Duty Librarian for assistance.

17. Where can I get information on student work in the Library?

For current information see Vacancies.

18. If I cannot get an item in the Library, can I get it elsewhere?

See Other Libraries' Catalogues. The Duty Librarian can assist in finding material and Visiting Other Libraries.

Alternatively, you may wish to apply for an Inter-Library Loan.

19. Can I top up my College photocopying card in the Library?

Yes indeed! The College now uses an integrated system for all student printing and copying, with several kiosks to top-up your account throughout all the College library buildings.

20. Where do I get change to buy a Library photocopying card?

The Library does not issue change for any reason. We recommend visiting the Arts Block coffee shop or the shops on nearby Nassau Street. That said, the kiosks accept 50cent, €1 and €2 coins as well as notes - you only need to add as much as you need for now. You can also top-up online with a credit or debit card.

21. Will my sick cert cover my fines?

See Sick Certificates.

22. Where can I look at old exam papers?

See the College's Examination Papers page.

23. Where do I reserve a postgraduate carrel?

See Carrels.

24. Can Information Service clients use electronic resources?

Information Service clients may use electronic resources such as online journals or databases in the Library only. This is on the understanding that resources are being used for research purposes only. See the Information Service Copyright page.

25. My lecturer recommended a journal article but I cannot locate the journal volume in the Library...

From time to time lecturers place photocopies of material not held in the Library in the Short Loan (Counter Reserve) Collection. Please ask the Duty Librarian for assistance.

26. Can I photocopy an out of print book in its entirety?

If a book is out of print it does not necessarily mean it is out of copyright. See Works No Longer Protected By Copyright. However, even if the book can legally be copied in its entirety, it may be cheaper to purchase a second hand copy from online vendors such as AbeBooks or Alibris rather than photocopy each page.

27. Where can I get an ID photo taken on campus?

The Students’ Union Shop.

28. Where can I find out about a journal’s impact factor?

See Journal Impact Factors.

29. Does the Library have SPSS (user survey software) on CD?

No. However IS Services will issue a copy to members of Trinity College Dublin. See their software catalogue for many other programs of interest to staff and students.

30. As a prospective Erasmus student due to study abroad, can I access the Library’s electronic resources?

Yes. See Off Campus Access. Please ensure that you notify the Academic Registry so that you are kept on the “books” for the period of time you are away; you may also wish to collect a current Trinity College Dublin ID Card from the Academic Registry if you return to Ireland on holiday, to enable you to use the Library.

31. I cannot find an Irish government publication using the title?

Following cataloguing rules, the Irish language title is frequently used. Example: Rules and Programme for Secondary Schools will be catalogued as Rialacha agus clar do Leith meanscoileanna. If you are experiencing difficulty, please ask the Duty Librarian for assistance.

32. Does the Library lend music CDs?

The Library’s CD music collection can only be used within the Library and is mainly located in the Short Loan (Counter Reserve) collection - ask at the Service Counter. Berkeley Library (PDF 101KB) for a particular disc. The Department of Music lends music CDs to students and staff affiliated to the Department.

33. Where can I find printers in College to print out my documents?

See this Datapac page for details.

34. Where is the Datastream database PC in the Library?

It's outside the Library proper, in the 24-hour computer room adjacent to the Ussher Library. This PC is labelled and maintained by IS Services, not the Library.
