Accessing EndNote Basic
EndNote Basic (formerly EndNote Web) is an online version of EndNote. While anyone can sign up to a free account with a very limited number of styles and searchable databases, members of Trinity College Dublin can sign up for an enhanced EndNote Basic account using a PC on campus. The enhanced version can then be accessed from any location both on and off campus.
Unlike the normal EndNote program, the enhanced version of EndNote Basic can be used on personal PCs free-of-charge as part of Trinity College Library Dublin's licence arrangement. The software is therefore particularly recommended for use by undergraduate, Diploma and taught Masters students, who have generally not been provided with a Trinity College Dublin PC.
Enhanced accounts set up in this way are valid for 12 months from the login date, before reverting to the free version with less features. The above access is controlled by Adept Scientific and the Library cannot be held responsible if they change access or conditions without notice. The 12-month period is reset by logging into EndNote Basic from the College domain (i.e., a PC on campus). This is important if the user is leaving Trinity College Dublin; users can theoretically gain another 12 months of access from other PCs by doing this before they leave. The Library recommends exporting the EndNote Library from within EndNote Basic for backup purposes at the end of every academic year and before leaving Trinity. Those finishing at Trinity may also wish to purchase the full version at a discounted rate before they leave and import the EndNote Basic Library; purchasing the software also gives another two years' access to the enhanced EndNote Basic.
Visit the Adept Scientific EndNote Basic page for more details. A comparison table of EndNote Basic and EndNote is available.
EndNote Basic is not specifically supported by the Library, training concentrates on the using the full EndNote program. However, a Guide to EndNote Web (PDF 519KB) (EndNote Web was rebranded as EndNote Basic in spring 2013) written by Library staff is available to download, or view the official EndNote Basic training video.
EndNote Basic and Macs
In order for EndNote Basic to access the Internet on campus, the following changes had to be made to a Mac's proxy settings. If you can use EndNote Basic properly from a Mac on the student Wi-Fi network without these changes, please let us know!
- Launch System Preferences by clicking on the Apple menu item and choosing System Preferences
- Click on the Network icon under Internet & Wireless
- Click on the button called Advanced
- Click on the tab called Proxies
- Make sure Configure Proxies is set to Manually
- Tick Web Proxy (HTTP). The Web Proxy Server is tcdproxy.tcd.ie. Tick Proxy server requires password and enter your TCD NETWORK login details
- Repeat 6. above for Secure Web Proxy (HTTPS)
- Make sure Automatic Proxy Configuration is also ticked, with http://www.tcd.ie/proxy.cgi as the Proxy Configuration File address
- Now, go back to Word and on the EndNote Basic toolbar, click Cite While You Write Preferences and then the Application tab
- Enter your EndNote Basic details and click OK
