School Visits

The Library welcomes supervised school visits to the Old Library.

Please note that tours are self-guided and that information packs are available online only (see below). At peak times there can be queues for admission to the building, schools are requested if possible to provide numbers, date and approximate time in advance by e-mail.

School groups (18 years and under) have free admission to the Old Library and the Book of Kells exhibition from 1 October to 1 April only.

School groups aged 12 years old and under have free admission all year.

Outside of this period school groups pay the group rate of €6.50 per person with teachers free of charge.

A member of staff may, on occasion, be available to speak to a school group about the Old Library and the Book of Kells exhibition for a small fee. Those wishing to avail of this service should contact us. Please note that such requests must be made at least six weeks in advance and staff availability cannot be guaranteed.

Support for Teaching

The Library has designed sets of worksheets which can be used during and after a tour by students. These give some background text to the exhibition and pose related questions. Similarly, teachers’ guides provide some ideas for preparation prior to a class visit and some further resources.

NEW 'A great many choice books' Worksheet (PDF 2.51MB)

Worksheets and teachers’ guides are available for download (unfortunately these cannot be provided during visits).
