On Saturday 19 February the third annual Trinity College Law Student Colloquium was held in college. This free-to-attend event is unique in providing a forum for law students at both undergraduate and postgraduate level to present their research. The plenary address was given by Fellow of Trinity College and former lecturer in the Law School, The Honourable Mr Justice Gerard Hogan of the High Court.

In his address Judge Hogan commended the organising committee and colloquium speakers for their hard work. He reflected on the huge volume of case-law now coming from the Irish, English, Strasbourg and Luxembourg courts, and the difficulties this posed for the doctrine of precedent. He emphasised clarity and brevity in legal writing. He noted the value of academic critiques of court decisions, but added that the process of deciding cases was not an easy one. The judge's speech was peppered with his customary wit and erudition, and received a warm response from the delegates.

Approximately 120 people attended the colloquium, which saw 35 speakers from Ireland, the United Kingdom and further afield deliver a diverse range of papers in parallel sessions. Among the themes of the ten subject sessions were 'Comparative Constitutional Law and Theory', 'Medicine, Ethics and the Law' and 'Judges and Jurors.' It is a particular objective of the colloquium to encourage undergraduate participation, and the proceedings drew to a close with the awarding of prizes to three outstanding undergraduate presentations.
