Research
Staff at Trinity College Law School have research-based expertise in a wide range of areas, including Constitutional Law, Criminal Law, Commercial Law, Equity, Torts, Contract Law, European Union Law, International Law and Human Rights. Individual areas of interest can be seen here.
Research carried out in the Law School is published in many of the leading international peer-reviewed journals. Books and monographs are also regularly produced on most aspects of Irish Law, as well as on more specific areas of European and International Law. The Law School is responsible for the annual production of the Dublin University Law Journal, Ireland’s leading peer-reviewed periodical.
Trinity College Law School has a vibrant postgraduate research culture. Students enrolled for either a Ph.D. or M.Litt participate in weekly staff-led research seminars and peer presentations. Financial support is available for students who wish to present at national and international conferences. Supervision is available in many areas of interest, and applications to study for a research degree are most welcome.
The Law School’s Research Strategy is based on the distinctive culture of legal research, which, in contrast to many other disciplines, involves textual analysis of core texts - constitutional, statutory and judicial - from the standpoints of logic, philosophy, ethics, politics and social policy, as well as engaging in more overtly interdisciplinary projects. It tends naturally to involve a high degree of individual reflection but also team-based research. The Research Strategy encourages research of this character, with an emphasis on Globalisation and Regulation. The latter theme is very broad, encompassing a wide range of aspects of public and private law, at national, EU and global levels.
Constitutional Law and Policy Group
The Law School is Ireland's leading centre for research into constitutional law. Several academics and postgraduate students are working in this area. In order to provide an identity and focus for this research, the Law School has recently established a Constitutional Law and Policy Group. This is open to academics and researchers from other disciplines and will not be limited to Irish constitutional law. The Group will organise workshops where interested parties can present their research and benefit from group discussion and also consider publishing collective research papers on issues of constitutional law and policy that are of public interest.
