The School of Law in association with the Irish Clinical Legal Education Association ICLEA) present a workshop entitled "Representing Vulnerable Clients - Perspectives and Strategies from the U.S."

This workshop will provide an overview of best practices and perspectives from the United States for overcoming challenges in assisting clients who have a disability, are minors, are from different cultures, have different sexual orientations and gender identities, are non-English speakers and/or are victims of trauma or abuse. The topics will include working with interpreters, building client relationships across difference, empowering vulnerable clients and maintaining their dignity, and counselling children and clients under a mental disability. The workshop will also address the relevant ethical guidelines and the secondary trauma issues associated with representing those who have experienced trauma.

Prof. JoNel Newman and Melissa Swain are Director and Associate Director of the Health Rights Clinic at the University of Miami School of Law.

The presenters come from one of the poorest cities in the United States of America where they represent, and teach students to represent, vulnerable and impoverished individuals in the areas of immigration, health and human rights and public benefits. Of their Clinic’s 200 clients, only 3% self identify as non-Hispanic white, and nearly one-half speak languages other than English, many are unaccompanied immigrant children and all are health-impaired.
