ABOUT THE SPEAKERS:

Maeve Cryan is a graduate of law of University College Dublin.  She has been researching traditional national resource management and land tenure in Timor Leste for Concern and will be taking up the position as mentor to the Land Property Working Group on land rights and legislation in December.

Juan Bautista Etcheverry is Associate Professor in the Philosophy of Law at Austral University, Buenos Aires.   His published works include a book on the debate surrounding Dworkin’s challenges to legal positivism.

Dr. Carla de Marcelino Gomes is Programme Officer and Researcher at the Human Rights Centre of the University of Coimbra.

Laura Grenfell lectures in human rights law, constitutional law and comparative constitutional law at the University of Adelaide.  She has published widely in the areas of feminist theory and transitional justice.  Her article, ‘Legal Pluralism and the Rule of Law in Timor Leste’, was published in the Leiden Journal of International Law in 2006.

Susan Harris Rimmeris Research Officer at the Centre for International Governance and Justice and is President of Australian Lawyers for Human Rights.  She has completed a doctorate on transitional justice and the women of East Timor.

Tiago Sarmento is National Programme Officer of the Legal Affairs Section/ SRSG of UNMIT and former Director of the Judicial System Monitoring Programme (JSMP), an NGO providing independent information on the judicial systems of East Timor and Indonesia.

Clive Symmons is Research Associate in Law at Trinity College Dublin and Adjunct Professor at NUI Galway Maritime and Ocean Policy Centre.  He has written extensively on international law; his book Historic Waters in the Law of the Sea: A Modern Re-appraisal, was published by Brill in 2007. 

Fernando Tolleris a Professor of Law at Austral University, Buenos Aires.  He was a visiting eesearcher at Harvard Law School in November 2007.  His published works include books on freedom of the press and on constitutional interpretation of fundamental rights.

Pat Walsh, Senior Adviser to CAVR, is a member of the Post-CAVR Technical Secretariart.  He was formerly Human Rights Director of the Australian Council for Overseas Aid.

Spencer Zifcak is Professor and Director of the Institute of Legal Studies at Australian Catholic University.  He has held appointments as Visiting Fellow at Wolfson College, Oxford and New York University and was an Australian Vice-President of the International Commission of Jurists for ten years.
