Courses for Visiting Foreign Students (Office of International Student Affairs; application details):

Irish Literature and the Irish Language:

This one-year course on Irish (Gaelic) literature and language is designed specifically to meet the needs of visiting students. Its aim is to provide students with an introduction to Irish studies, and topics to be dealt with are: early Irish society, history of the Irish language, Irish literature (early to contemporary) and Irish folklore. Since separate topics of the course are taught in each term, admission may be gained to the course at the beginning of each term, provided there are vacancies, and credit units (6, 6, 3) earned accordingly. In addition students may study elementary modern Irish language.

Duration: Academic year

Contact hours p/w: 2 lectures; 1 seminar or 2 tutorials

Assessment: 3 essays or 2 essays and 1 x 2-hour (language) exam

Weighting: 15 units

Elementary Irish:

The course is designed to enable visiting students to acquire a basic command of the Modern Irish language. Though the course is non-intensive, provision can also be made for use by the students of the Language Centre's laboratory as an auto-tutor facility.

Duration: Academic year

Contact hours p/w: 2 classes

Assessment: 1 x 2-hour exam

Weighting: Not for credit
