Departmental Study visit to Vienna

The annual study visit took place from January 10th-15th in Vienna. A group of thirty-nine students was accompanied by Christine Casey, Peter Cherry, and Angela Griffith. Conor Lucey, IRC Elevate post-doctoral fellow, also joined the group. The itinerary included all of the principal galleries and museums, together with buildings by Fischer von Erlach, Gottfried Semper, Otto Wagner, and Adolf Loos. Highlights included a scaffold view of the Karlskirche dome – revealing the limitations of local fresco painters –, Wagner’s St Leopold emerging from the mist of the Steinhof, a roomful of Brueghel peasant paintings and Velázquez’s portraits of short-lived Habsburg brides at the Kunsthistorishes Museum, Egon Schiele’s still controversial nudes at the Belvedere, and the show-stopping Louis XV interiors of the Liechtenstein city palace. The weather was generally kind and spirits were high. The trip culminated with a hotly contested quiz based on works seen during the week.
