Modernism and Post-Modernism (HA2344)

Course organiser: Dr Yvonne Scott
Duration of Course: September-April
Contact Hours:33 (22 x 1 weekly lecture, 11 x fortnightly seminar)
Weighting: 10 ECTS

The focus of this course is the emergence and development of Modernism to around 1970, and its legacy in Post-modern and contemporary art to the present day. It will explore the expanding range of materials and their applications ranging from traditional painting and sculpture to video and installation, considered in the context of the various movements, such as Cubism, Surrealism, Minimalism, Neo-Expressionism and others but also in terms of relevant issues and themes which are not confined to specific movements. While the course is predominantly concerned with developments in Europe and North America, it will also respond to the changing perception of art, from a relatively insular Western view to a more global approach embracing the art of other continents.
