Join the National Conversation on Alcohol - Who's Calling the Shots

Date: Monday 23rd September

Time: 6.00pm

Venue: RCPI, No. 6 Kildare St

Details: Dr Stephen Stewart, Consultant Hepatologist and Director of the Centre for Liver Disease at the Mater Hospital and Dr Bobby Smyth, Consultant Child & Adolescent Psychiatrist will speak at the event. Other speakers include Colette Quinn, Director Juvenile Diversion Programme, An Garda Síochána and John Buckley from Spunout.ie. The speakers will discuss issues such as healthy alcohol consumption and binge drinking, mental health issues, underage drinking and alternatives to the binge drinking culture.
 
The public meeting, which is free of charge, will include a Q&A session for all who attend to put forward their questions to the panel of experts. The meeting will also be broadcast as a live webcast.

Cancer Research Lecture

Details: Dr Elena B. Elkin will give a lecture in the School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences, Trinity College Dublin, research lecture series entitled;

'A View from 30,000 Feet and 3,000 Miles: Population-Based Analysis of Cancer Care and Outcomes in the US'

Dr Elkin comes from the Center for Health Policy and Outcomes at the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York and has published extensively in three main fields;

  • Health services research in cancer using population-based registries, administrative data and national surveys.
  • Decision support for cancer screening.
  • Economic evaluation of targeted cancer interventions.

Those of you who will be volunteering, or are considering volunteering, should consult the Guidelines on International Development Volunteering & Service-Learning at http://www.tcd.ie/Community/resources/

The purpose of this document is to encourage best practice in international development volunteering and service-learning, to minimise potential risks and to ensure meaningful and mutually beneficial experiences for participants, community organisations and other organisers and the host community. It is recommended that the principles outlined in Comhlámh’s Volunteer Charter and Code of Good Practice for Sending Organisations are upheld.

 

Clinical Innovation Award 2013 - Call for Proposals

Cleveland Clinic & Enterprise Ireland would like to recognise the importance of clinical innovation in Ireland by presenting the “Clinical Innovation Award”. This award will provide a grant of €15,000 and the opportunity to work with Cleveland Clinic & Enterprise Ireland to develop the commercial potential of your innovative idea.

To submit your idea please complete & return the application form by 15th August 2013.
The “Clinical Innovation Award” winner will be announced at Med-in-Ireland on 23rd Oct 2013.

Title: The more candles, the bigger the wish: Ageing with a learning (intellectual) disability

Details: Providing support for people ageing with a learning (intellectual) disability is quickly emerging as a key priority across Australia. This seminar will focus on the development of models of support for people with learning disabilities in Australia, the problems with the policy structure that defines ageing and disability as distinct issues, and what possible steps may be taken to redress the perceived inequity and inequality in the systems. The findings and conclusions from research undertaken in conjunction with direct support workers across large areas of rural and remote areas will be presented to suggest areas for improvement and potential collaborations.
Although this is a FREE SEMINAR, places are limited and booking is essential.

Radient Public Outreach Event

The Discipline of Radiation Therapy at Trinity College Dublin (TCD) is hosting a patient-centred exhibition and public outreach event aimed at promoting knowledge and awareness of radiation therapy in the general public at the Science Gallery, TCD on Friday June 21st from 10.00am to 6.00pm. The format of RADIENT is a series of information lectures and showcases, juxtaposed with patients’ own experiences of radiation therapy as expressed by former patients, through direct educational input, as well as alternative media such as works of art and literary contributions. 

  • Mapping of the patient journey through radiation therapy
  • Outlining of the treatment process and how a treatment machine works
  • Demonstration of virtual simulation software to demonstrate radiotherapy treatment
  • A “spoken word” session, with contributions from well-known authors Lia Mills and Emma Hannigan, who have written about their experiences of cancer treatment
  • An art exhibition,  with contributions from former/current patients who wish to express themselves through the medium of individual works of art
