Dr. Daragh Downes (B.A., MPhil., PhD) is an Assistant Professor in the Dept. of Germanic studies. He teaches on a range of undergraduate literature courses, and directs the Sophister Dissertation seminar. His PhD thesis, The Fear and Trembling of Malte Laurids Brigge, focused on parapsychological and mystical themes in a number of key texts of European modernism. His research interests include German Romanticism; German Idealist philosophy; Marxist literary theory; Friedrich Nietzsche; Theodor Fontane; and Rainer Maria Rilke.
