Description(Aims):
This module is designed to demonstrate the value of a holistic approach by combining all the different specialist aspects of geology and applying them to unravelling the evolution of a familiar part of the lithosphere. Lecture material will be cross-referenced to previous field experience and other compulsory modules taken during the course of the degree. The application of many previously studied aspects to the exploration and extraction of economic minerals will be the focus of the economic geology part of the module. This will deal mainly with base metals and will include examples from outside Ireland.
Learning outcomes:
On successful completion of this module students should be able to design a logical programme to unravel the evolution of any part of the lithosphere and should appreciate how each of the different areas of geology could contribute to this programme. They should also have a reasonable knowledge of the geological evolution of Ireland. (PO1, 2,3,4,6,7) They should be able to recognise the common economic minerals, devise strategies for exploration for these and appreciate the economic factors controlling the viability of mineral exploration and production.
