Module Learning Aims:
To develop strategies to be able to work backwards from a preserved record of rocks to interpret palaeoenvironments.
Module Content:
The module will examine the major depositional environments at the Earth's current surface and will relate information from these to the preserved successions of rocks.
Learning outcomes:
On successful completion of this module students should be able to:
• outline the relationship between physical and biological processes and resultant sedimentary structures
• recognise how ancient environments can be deduced from the information preserved in the stratigraphic record
• make a reasoned interpretation of depositional environment based both on field observations and on published data
