Module GL3310: Fieldwork

Module GL3310
Co-ordinator: Dr John Graham
Course Type: Mandatory
Assessment: In-course accessment 100%
ECTS: 15 credits
Prerequisites: JS Geology students only

Module Learning Aims:

To acquire practice in appropriate field techniques needed to gather and interpret data that are later used to produce geological models for interpretation.

Undergraduate geological field modules provide the vital experience of putting knowledge learned in the classroom into practice. This knowledge is not just theoretical aspects of the Earth Sciences. Much of this module
takes place during two extended residential courses and involves techniques such as rock identification, recording structural information, and production of geological maps and erection of stratigraphy.

Learning outcomes:

On successful completion of this module students should be able to:
• select the most appropriate techniques and applications at their disposal to investigate rocks in the field
• confidently undertake their own geological surveys, wherever they may be in the world, either with published base maps or not
• interpret the origin and formation any common rock type based on their own field observations
• use their observational and interpretive skills to piece together the geological evolution of any given area
