Description:
The aims of this module are to provide a basic understanding of igneous, sedimentary and metamorphic rocks. Techniques of describing and reaching first stage interpretations of rocks in hand sample and thin section will be covered. Rock associations will be placed in a global context. The module includes a half-day field trip to Howth.
Learning outcomes:
On successful completion of this module students will be able to:
• Identify common rock types in the field
• Conduct basic laboratory analysis to identify and classify common rock types in hand sample and thin section
• Describe the processes and environments responsible for the formation of these common rock types
• Outline the relationship between these common rock types and the major tectonic settings on earth. (PO2, 6)
