Title of Project

Fingerprinting isotopic signatures for metal enrichment in European trees: Developing vectors for mineral exploration

Project details

This research is a part of project called IsoNose - Isotopic Tools for Novel Sensors of Earth’s Surface Resources (http://www.isonose.eu/home/) and it is related to Innovations in Metal Ore Exploration (Working Program 4) funded through Marie Curie Actions.

In order to develop more sophisticated techniques in mineral prospecting important question needs to be addressed: can we use plants as a tool for mineral exploration? Plant biogeochemistry over Zn-Pb Navan ore body (Ireland) and Porphyry Cu deposit in Laver (Sweden) will provide new insights into geobotanical prospecting in varied European terrains and climates. Metals are being transported from bedrock, through soils to the plants giving us a bio-geochemical signature of the buried mineralization. Using multi-element geochemistry and stable metal isotopes we can fingerprint element pathways in the Plant-Soil-Ore model, having direct implications for Industry and to the better understanding of biogeochemical metal cycling.

Postgraduate personal details

I’ve completed undergraduate and graduate studies at the Faculty of Science, University of Zagreb, in Croatia 2012. I’ve pursued my Master`s degree in Environmental Geology at the Department of Mineralogy and Petrology where I did a research about adsorption properties of loess deposits. My mainly focus were chemical and physical properties of clay minerals in soils and in the loess deposits. After completing my master’s studies I’ve started to work as an expert associate at the Ministry of Agriculture in Zagreb, Croatia. My work there was mainly related to the Legislative in Water Management (https://ie.linkedin.com/in/danijela-mavrić-71470359).

Project Start Date

March 2015

Funding

The research leading to these results has received funding from the People Programme (Marie Curie Actions) of the European Union's Seventh Framework Programme FP7/2007-2013/ under REA grant agreement n°[608069].
