John R Graham - Associate Professor

John Graham

Name: John R Graham

Research Area

My research deals primarily with sedimentary rocks, especially field-based studies, with particular emphasis on how interpretation of these can contribute to regional geological problems. I have a particular interest in the geology of Ireland and adjacent areas. Current work is looking at the Carboniferous sedimentary record of north and west Ireland and trying to evaluate the relative contributions of regional tectonics and global sea level changes in the development of the preserved stratigraphy. I have ongoing interests in the dynamic evolution of the Laurentian margin during the early Palaeozoic.

Current Research and Research Opportunities

A current project designed to refine the goniatite biostratigraphy in the early Pennsylvanian of the Shannon Basin will be expanded to also look at sedimentation during rapid sea level rises.

Teaching

At Senior Freshman Level, I teach the stratigraphy part of our Palaeontology & Stratigraphy module GL2202, and part of our Petrology module GL2203.
At Junior Sophister level, I teach the Sedimentary Petrology module GL3301, and the Ancient Environments module GL3311.
At Senior Sophister level I teach part of the Geology of Ireland module GL4404
I contribute significantly to the sophister fieldwork modules GL3310, GL4402 and GL3315

I am currently the Course advisor for Geology and Senior Proctor of the University.
