Geology Department officially open newly equipped "Geology Alumni Microscope Laboratory"

February 2014

The Geology Department officially opened the newly equipped "Geology Alumni Microscope Laboratory" on Friday evening, February the 7th. The event started with three brief presentations by Geology staff illustrating the role of optical mineralogy in modern teaching, the use of the UK Virtual Microscope for teaching microscopy and the engagement of alumni, friends and corporate sponsors in helping to fund this on-going initiative. The laboratory is currently equipped to 75% with new microscopes. After the presentations, alumni and friends who attended the opening had an opportunity to test the new microscopes for themselves before moving into the Freeman Library, where old connections were rekindled and new acquaintances were being made over light refreshments. The Provost of Trinity College Dublin, Prof. Patrick Prendergast, addressed the audience in the Library and officially opened the laboratory by unveiling the plaque that recognises the contributions made to date.
