Congratulations to Lara Cassidy of the graduating Human Genetics class of 2013 for winning a Bram Stoker medal at the international Undergraduate Awards!

Lara was the overall winner in the Life Sciences category for her literature review "Syncytin Genes and the Evolutionary Invention of the Mammalian Placenta".

The award was judged by an international panel chaired by Dr Geoffrey Brown of the University of Birmingham. The judges' comments were overwhelmingly positive, and in particular they wrote "This essay could serve as the standard for everything that good scientific writing is about. ... It is well constructed and accessible to the non-expert reader; a detailed and thought-provoking review of a fascinating topic. An outstanding piece of scientific writing that would be worthy of publication in any of the best scientific journals."

Lara has recently started a Ph.D. in the Bradley Laboratory.
