General prerequisites:
Other forms of language qualification may be considered. European History, West European Politics, and Sociology of Europe: some background in at least one of these subjects is required. 1. Languages Two languages are chosen from the following list: a) French language Contact hours per week: 5 hours Assessment: 2 x 2-hour papers; oral ECTS weighting: 15 units Description: The courses include two language classes, a lecture course on civilisation et techniques d'écriture, language laboratory work, and exposés oraux. They seek to develop fluency in reading and in guided composition in styles and topics related to European Studies. Particular emphasis is laid on the continuing study of grammar. b) German languageContact hours per week: 5 hours Assessment: 1 x 2-hour paper; assessed work; oral ECTS weighting: 15 units Description: The courses include writing skills, based on a study of the German press; grammar and/or syntax; listening and comprehension skills; reading skills, with texts related to European Studies, and conversation. c) Italian language Contact hours per week: 5 hours Assessment: 2 x 3-hour papers; oral and aural ECTS weighting: 15 units Description: The course includes two language classes, two classes on Italian society, politics and history, and a conversation class. This is an intermediate level course, with non-literary materials related to European Studies. d) Russian language. Contact hours per week: 5 hours Assessment: 1x 3-hour paper; oral and aural; assessed work; 4 x tests; project in English using Russian materials. ECTS weighting: 15 units Description: Language and Stranovedenie - Topics: (inter alia) Sociology, Economics, Political Structures; Project work; Introduction to the Russian Press. This is an intermediate level course, with non-literary materials related to European Studies. e) Spanish language Contact hours per week: 5 hours Assessment: 2 x 2-hour papers, oral. ECTS weighting: 15 units Description: The course comprises two courses in writing and reading Spanish, one conversation class and one devoted to Spanish vocabulary and knowledge of Spanish contemporary life. A more historically based Introduction to contemporary Spain is also given. The course develops fluency and accuracy in the use of Spanish, and offers an introduction to modern intellectual and social life in Spain. 2. Disciplines Students take a course in the 'Culture and Politics in Europe 1700-1890' and choose one of four courses on contemporary Europe:
