Junior Sophister
The Junior Sophister year is spend studying abroad at an approved partner institution in the country of the major language. The various European Studies disciplines are studied through the medium of the major language, alongside other students in the partner institution. We regard the Junior Sophister year abroad as a key component in the European Studies degree: as well as allowing you to achieve a high level of competence in your major language, your will benefit greatly from rising to the challenge of adapting to a new educational environment and through exposure to different intellectual traditions and cultural norms.
The Junior Sophister year abroad is a compulsory element of the European Studies programme. Marks derived from work submitted to the exchange university during the Junior Sophister year abroad enable students to rise with the year. Students must achieve a pass grade, otherwise they must repeat examinations, as determined by their host university, or repeat the Junior Sophister year in Trinity.
Marks awarded for the Junior Sophister are recorded in students’ Diploma Supplement, but do not count towards your final degree result. Students are examined in their minor language in the Moderatorship examination (reading translation and comprehension skills only) and consequently you will need to maintain your competence in it during the third year. Further information on Junior Sophister year is available in SOCRATES & Other Exchanges.
