Students also study the European past and present through several intellectual disciplines - history, political science and sociology. After a common first year, students can choose to emphasize the intellectual disciplines which interest them the most. There is a particular emphasis on the history of ideas (political, social, philosophical) in their cultural context. The history of ideas forms the compulsory core of the programme. The aim of these courses is to ensure a familiarity on the part of students with the evolution of European thought since the Age of Enlightenment. As an integral part of the programme, the third year is spent at a university abroad. The country is determined by the student's choice of major language in the course of their second year. A number of exchanges have been established for this purpose with History and Political Science departments in universities in France, Germany, Italy, Poland, Russia and Spain. As from 1999-2000, up to 2 students per year may be selected for the double diploma exchange programme. This involves a more demanding syllabus than the single year abroad. After successful completion of the two years, students return for the Senior Sophister year in European Studies in TCD. If successful, the two years of study at the IEP Strasbourg and the three years in Trinity College Dublin lead to the award of both The Moderatorship in European Studies (TCD) and the Diplôme de lInstitut dEtudes Politiques.
