Pioneers


They wandered through the dark places and they kept
The prideful passionate horse tight-reined that would have leapt
The fence dividing star from meaner dust,
To trample down the corn which yields all men a crust.

They hungered as they went the sharp-stoned road,
And only one small lamp above them glowed…
I too have eaten of the holy bread,
A crust they spared for me who no name had
