Leaving Certificate Lectures 2011

English Literature Evening Lectures Series 2011

This course will provide an introduction to major authors of poetry, drama and prose through close examination of selected texts, chosen from among those prescribed for the Leaving Certificate in 2012. The course will be of special interest to teachers and pupils preparing for the examination but the lectures will be directed towards a more general audience as well.

There will be ten weekly lectures beginning on Tuesday, 11 October 2011 at 7:00 p.m., in the Edmund Burke Theatre, Arts Building Trinity College Dublin.

1. October 11: William Shakespeare, Hamlet (Amanda Piesse)
2. October 18: Jane Austen, Emma (Darryl Jones)
3. October 25: Seamus Heaney, Selected poems (Gerald Dawe)
4. November 1: Thomas Hardy, Tess of the D’Urbervilles

5. November 8: J.G. Ballard, Empire of the Sun (Mark O’Connell)
6. November 15: Brian Friel, Dancing at Lughnasa (Nicholas Grene)
7. November 22: Sylvia Plath, Selected poems (Stephen Matterson)
8. November 29: Philip Larkin, Selected poems (Philip Coleman)
9. December 6: William Shakespeare, Hamlet Repeat Lecture
