Computer Engineering (Stream D)

Introduction

School leavers and other potential undergraduate students seeking information about the Engineering course are recommended to visit the College's Admissions Office pages.

Computer systems have a major impact on our daily lives, in areas such as telecommunications, drawing money from Automated Teller Machines, transportation by air, land and sea and in health care. Industries which produce sophisticated products are to an ever increasing degree dependent on computer systems for both design and manufacturing operations. The impact of the computer will be even greater in the future as the potential of the microprocessor chip has not yet been fully realised due to the lack of software. The development of appropriate software is the key to the exploitation of this technology.

Software is already the main component of many systems. For example, 70% of the value of a telecommunications switch is software. Software is clearly an appropriate industry for Ireland. The particular value of this course is that students learn about other engineering areas and this will be of great benefit to them when designing computer systems. Such interdisciplinary knowledge is very important in today's complex world.

Course Content

Engineering students may choose to join the degree programme in computer engineering, following the first two years which are common to all engineering students. (See Junior Freshman Engineering and Senior Freshman Engineering for more infomation about the first two years.) In the third year students take four courses which cover microprocessor systems (mainly assembly language programming on the Motorola 68000), and students also build a microprocessor system. The other courses are on concurrent systems and computer aided design. Students must also take two courses in microelectronics in addition to mathematics, numerical methods, statistics and the engineer, management and society. In the fourth year courses cover networking and advanced microprocessor systems; knowledge and data engineering; operating systems and distributed systems and computer aided design. Each final year student also completes a substantial project. Practical work is emphasised throughout the four years. See also the engineering option in electronic and computer engineering.

Career Opportunities

Computer science is a young discipline with a world-wide demand for software and system designers. Just as coal and steel were the essential ingredients in the industrial revolution, software drives the modern economy. It is necessary for every sector and it pervades our lives. In Ireland there is a significant number of leading international software houses whose success is encouraging more to set up here. Graduates are employed in a broad range of companies including indigenous software houses, major industrial companies, research institutions and multi-nationals in Ireland, Europe, the U.S.A. and Japan. This specialism of the Bachelor in Engineering (B.A.I.) degree is recognised for professional engineering purposes by the Institution of Engineers of Ireland, the Institution of Electrical Engineers and other professional bodies which are signatories to the Washington Accord concerning the mutual recognition of qualifications.
