Aoibhinn Ní Shúilleabháin

Biography

Aoibhinn Ní Shúilleabháin is a qualified post-primary school teacher and taught mathematics, physics, applied mathematics and science for over three years in Dublin. During this time she taught in a Project Maths pilot school (phase 1 of the curriculum roll-out) and trained as a Project Maths facilitator providing professional development courses for mathematics teachers in the new curriculum. During this time she also mentored her students in participating in various mathematics and science events and competitions.

Aoibhinn was an Entrance Scholar to University College Dublin and achieved first class honours in BSc. Theoretical Physics in 2005. She graduated with first class honours from the Postgraduate Diploma in Education in Trinity College Dublin.

She was awarded the Ussher Fellowship from 2011 to 2014 to conduct a research on Mathematics Education incorporating the new post-primary ‘Project Maths’ curriculum.

Aoibhinn is a member and Project Maths facilitator representative on the Project Maths Implementation Support Group, an industry-education partnership whose mandate is to examine and report to the Tánaiste and Minister for Education and Skills on how stakeholders can work together to help achieve the objectives of the new mathematics curriculum in second level schools.

Aoibhinn has lectured Mathematics Pedagogy in the School of Education, Trinity College Dublin, since 2011 and is also co-ordinator of the Mathematics Pedagogy teaching supervisions.

This random collection of tweet-sized facts, definitions and explanations from the world of science held number 1 in the Irish book-sellers list in December 2012. All proceeds from the book go to Cystic Fibrosis Association of Ireland.

OTHER

Member of the DARTofPhysics team who won funding from Science Foundation Ireland and other sources to promote physics on public transport in Dublin. In addition, the team developed a website explaining the concepts behind the statements www.dartofphysics.ie which includes resources for teachers to utilise within the classroom.

Aoibhinn is a Leonardo with the Science Gallery in Trinity College Dublin and maintains a strong interest in promoting mathematics and science as subjects at primary and post-primary level. In 2013 she co-curated the RISK lab exhibition with Pr. David Spiegelhalter, University of Cambridge, bringing the mathematics of risk to life.
